About Me

Growing up and background

Sujatha’s dance journey began at the early age of 5 in Chennai, when
dancing to rhythm was discovered as a natural element. She learned
from several teachers and later from Padmashri Guru Adyar K
Lakshman. Her growing-up years exposed her to watching the
great stalwarts’ performances in the sabhas of Chennai which left a
lasting impression for a lifetime and is etched in her memory.

Her foundation in the art form is built on intense training under esteemed gurus such as Padmashri Guru Adayar K. Lakshman, Guru Lata Raman, and advanced studies in abhinaya with Guru G. Venu, Mohiniattam with Dr. Nirmala Paniker, and Natyashastra under Dr. Sujatha Mohan. She was also mentored by Guru Ramya Ramnarayan.

Her performance career spans major national and international platforms—she has performed widely across India, and in the United States and Nepal. Her choreographic works such as Raas AntaraRama AmritamVidivuHanumanin ThavamDakshina Dwaraka, and Soorya have gained widespread acclaim for their narrative depth and creative expression.

Academically, she holds a Master’s in Bharatanatyam and a Bachelor’s in Music from Annamalai University and is a graded artist of Doordarshan. Her honors include the Nritya Kala Choodamani, Bharat Gaurav Samman by the Indian Ambassador in Nepal, Nritya Nipun, and Girnar Ratna—each a testament to her enduring impact on the world of Indian classical dance.

Beyond the stage, Smt. Ramanathan is a passionate educator and researcher. Her paper, “Life Skills and Leadership through Dance,” is published by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. She has also been a guest faculty member at IIM Mumbai for a lecture on “Leadership and Problem Solving ” through movement and expression. She also engages elders and young minds through the “Movement & Expression” initiative and promotes classical arts through NCPA’s school outreach programs in Mumbai.
