Growing up and background
Sujatha’s dance journey began at the early age of 5 in Chennai, when
dancing to rhythm was discovered as a natural element. She learned
from several teachers and later from Padmashri Guru Adyar K
Lakshman. Her growing-up years exposed her to watching the
great stalwarts’ performances in the sabhas of Chennai which left a
lasting impression for a lifetime and is etched in her memory.
Her performance career spans major national and international platforms, with performances across India, South Korea, the United States, and Nepal. Her choreographic works, including The Lotus of Wisdom – Jnana Kamala, Raas Antara, Rama Amritam, Vidivu, Hanumanin Thavam, Dakshina Dwaraka, Beeja, Shakti, and Soorya, have gained widespread acclaim for their narrative depth and creative expression.
Her acclaimed productions Rama Amritam, Raas Antara, The Lotus of Wisdom, and Hanumanin Thavam have been performed across India, South Korea, the U.S., and Nepal. A Doordarshan-graded artiste and recipient of prestigious awards such as Nritya Kala Choodamani, Bharat Gaurav Samman, and Girnar Ratna, she also holds a Master’s degree in Bharatanatyam and a Bachelor’s degree in Music.
Beyond the stage, she is a dedicated educator and researcher. Her work, Life Skills and Leadership through Dance, has been published by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. She has delivered lectures at IIM Mumbai and engages students and elders alike through her outreach initiatives and workshops. She is also a dance reviewer and writer for Narthaki.
